Certification & Course Essentials

Your questions about daily life, gear, and practical details — answered.

What is the International Sailing Schools Association (ISSA)?

The International Sailing Schools Association (ISSA) is a global network of sailors, professional instructors, sailing schools, and charter companies. Its mission is to promote safe and enjoyable recreational sailing worldwide through a standardized, internationally recognized education and certification system.

Benefits of ISSA Certification:

  • Globally recognized certificate accepted by charter companies
  • High standards of sailing education and safety
  • Access to structured, high-quality learning materials
  • Expert instruction from certified professionals
  • Clear goals and skill development at every level of training

Once you complete your course, you’ll receive an ISSA Skipper Certification Card. This card includes your certification level, issue date, as well as your name, your instructor’s name, and their ISSA ID number. It serves as official proof of your sailing qualification and is recognized internationally.

The processing time depends on ISSA’s administrative procedures, but typically, your certificate card arrives within 30 days by post.

Your ISSA certification and the Bulgarian 40GT certificate do not expire.

However, if you haven’t been sailing for a while and would like to refresh your knowledge and skills, we’d be happy to recommend our Back to Basics course.

Each charter company has its own requirements for qualifying prospective skippers. While some may accept the ISSA Inshore Skipper certification or the Bulgarian 40GT license on their own, many will also request a sailing resume detailing your on-water experience.

The ISSA Inshore Skipper certificate demonstrates that you’ve completed formal training and passed a structured program based on international standards.

Charter companies typically consider several factors, including:

  • Your certifications
  • Sailing experience
  • The size and type of vessel you intend to charter
  • The location and conditions of the charter area
  • The qualifications of your crew

The right course depends on your experience level and goals:

  • If you’re new to sailing, start with our Discover Sailing session or Basic Crew course to get a feel for the sea and essential skills.
  • If your goal is to skipper a yacht, the ISSA Inshore Skipper Course or Bulgarian 40GT Certification is the best fit.
  • If you already have a license but need practice, our Back to Basics course is ideal for refreshing your skills.
  • Still unsure? Contact us, and we’ll help you choose the perfect starting point for your sailing journey.

It’s not mandatory, but doing some study before starting your Skipper course is highly recommended. It will help you grasp the material more easily and make it easier to follow your instructor during the practical sessions — giving you a head start and more confidence on the water.

Becoming a certified Skipper involves three key stages:

1. Knowledge development

2. On-water training

3. Final assessment

The theory part is completed through independent study using our Skipper digital learning program, which takes around 30 hours.

The on-water practice can be completed in just one week.

Our Skipper course is flexible and performance-based, meaning you advance at your own pace. Once both you and your instructor feel confident you’ve mastered a skill, you move on. Need more time to practice something? That’s perfectly fine too. The goal is to ensure you become a safe, confident, and capable sailor, ready to enjoy cruising with ease and independence.

To become a certified Skipper, the minimum age is 18 years old.

However, younger sailors aged 14 to 17 can still join the adventure by earning the ISSA Yacht Crew Certificate, which recognizes competence and participation at the crew level.

We take a maximum of 4 students per yacht for our Skipper sailing courses. While our boats can accommodate more than eight people, we keep group sizes small to ensure personalized instruction and plenty of hands-on practice for each student.

Your training will take place along the coast of Varna, an ideal location for sailors of all levels. With its safe conditions and scenic coastline, it offers the perfect environment for both learning and enjoying the sea.

No, swimming is not required to participate in our sailing courses. However, being comfortable around water is recommended.

You’ll always wear a life jacket during training, and safety is our top priority on board.

Feeling seasick is common—especially for beginners—but don’t worry, it usually passes quickly. We recommend coming prepared with seasickness tablets or natural remedies if you’re prone to motion sickness. Our instructors are experienced in helping students feel comfortable on board. We’ll also plan regular breaks and calm sailing conditions, especially during your first days.

Most of our sailing courses run from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with short breaks throughout the day. Exact times may vary slightly depending on weather conditions, course type, and group preferences. We’ll confirm your schedule before the course begins.

Yes! Whenever the weather and schedule allow, we often anchor in calm bays where you’ll have time to swim, relax, and enjoy the sea. We believe sailing should be both educational and enjoyable — so we make room for fun along the way!

A typical day depends on the weather and the training material planned. Some days may start earlier or finish later to cover essential skills. When conditions allow, we often have time for a swim or a relaxing break during the day. Evenings are free for you to rest, explore, or enjoy the seaside atmosphere.

We train on a popular cruising sailing yacht—similar to the ones offered by charter companies around the world.

Our training boat is a Beneteau Oceanis 331 (10 meters, 2003), designed for both comfort and performance. It can accommodate up to 10 people and features:

  • 3 cabins

Yes, absolutely. Our yacht fully complies with the Code of Practice for Small Commercial Vessels and meets all the safety standards set by the Maritime Administration and Coastguard. Yes, the yacht is equipped with a toilet and onboard shower. When docked in a marina, you’ll also have access to shore-based facilities for added comfort.

Smoking is permitted onboard, but since space is shared with others, we kindly ask that you are considerate of your fellow crew members. Smoking should be done only at the back of the boat and downwind, and it’s always polite to ask for permission from others on board first.

Sailing is closely tied to weather conditions, and while we generally do not cancel lessons or offer refunds due to bad weather, we reserve the right to reschedule sessions if conditions are deemed unsafe. Your safety is our top priority, and we always adapt the training plan to match the weather while ensuring a valuable learning experience.

Please bring only soft bags — there’s limited storage space onboard.
