  • No prior certification required

  • Minimum age: 10 years old

This is a certified program, meaning you are eligible for an international certificate upon successful completion. However, you may choose to skip requesting the certificate if you plan to continue with the Inshore Skipper course. In that case, this program will be fully credited toward your skipper training.

ISSA Marine VHF Radio Operator – ONLINE

ISSA Marine VHF Radio Operator Course (Online). Get Your GMDSS Short Range Certificate (SRC).

Course Description

Master essential VHF radio communication skills with our ISSA Marine VHF Radio Operator Course – a complete online training designed to prepare you for safe and legal maritime communication.

Whether you’re planning a charter, cruising near the coast, or aiming to sail internationally, this course equips you with the knowledge and confidence to use marine radios effectively. You’ll learn:

  • Proper radio procedures and on-air etiquette

  • How to send and respond to distress, urgency, and safety messages

  • Techniques for using VHF radio for weather updates, navigation, and port communication

  • Hands-on simulation with Digital Selective Calling (DSC)

Once completed, you’ll be eligible for a lifetime ISSA GMDSS Short Range Certificate (SRC) – recognized worldwide and essential for operating a VHF radio on non-SOLAS vessels (under 300GT, in Sea Area A1, up to 30NM offshore).

How It Works:

1. Study the theory online at your own pace (approx. 10 hours)

2. Pass the exam quiz

3. Submit your application

4. Receive your ISSA SRC certificate by mail (valid for life)

How to Make a Mayday Call

1. Tune your VHF radio to Channel 16 (the international distress channel).

2. Press the transmit button and speak clearly and slowly.

Follow this format:

Call Sign and MMSI number (if available)

Position (latitude and longitude or a clear description)

Nature of Distress (fire, sinking, collision, etc.)
